1. VISIT ARCHITECTURE SHOWS AND EXHIBIT
Architecture shows offer a huge variety of projects and medias to provide us with inspiration and this is no secret but one we often forget because we are lazy to do so. The biggest advantage to these shows is that a lot of the projects exhibited have often been designed without or with limiting boundaries and restrictions. They provide a very experimental and often a refreshing break from the norm. You can bench mark yourself against your previous or current plans and design and to aim better because these shows are good opportunities’ to stay up to date with current architectural and home building design.
2. USE YOUR SITE
The worst thing you can do is designing a building in isolation without any site specific influences. The greatest tool to your design process should always be the projects site. The site is there for you to respond to and use to your advantage, It provides meaning and context to your design process, and when used correctly, will provide a frame work to work within, helping to answer design related questions.
3. DON’T IGNORE THE LANDSCAPE
The landscape is every part as important to the site as the architecture itself, the two need to work together and complement each other. It needs to be considered at the early design stages and be in harmony with the architectures concept development and for this reason it is important to not leave this part of the design process to the end of a project.
4. GIVE YOURSELF TIME
As we have mentioned, the design process and development takes time. Ideas need to be tested and allowed to adapt, and this process shouldn’t be rushed. So don’t be impatient, and make sure you leave enough time for it develop before it has to be presented.
5. DON’T IGNORE THE STRUCTURE
It is very easy when you may be not so aware of the limitations, to ignore or at least brush over your projects structural limitations. Creativity is one thing, but if it won’t be able to stand up then it is useless and/or very time consuming to make right.
6. BE RELEVANT
Stay up to date with the industry you are in and want to be part of. Being aware on the latest building technologies, construction techniques, regulations and current projects will ensure you and your design process are adapting and moving forward. Stay in touch with the discussions within and about architecture, and use the topics to help and inspire your critical thinking.
7. DEFINE THE SPACES
In many homes, there is a combination of clear rooms and open space. During the design process, define the space and the intended use. Changes in floor level, floor finish, ceiling condition, furniture arrangement and many other methods can contribute to the fine-tuning and definition.
8. DISCUSS THE PLANS WITH YOUR FAMILY
Ensure that you involve family members in the process because being the “sole decision maker” can sometimes backfire so make sure that in every step, process and decision make sure that you consult with your family and gather feedback to better the output.
9. PLAN TO FIT YOUR LIFESTYLE
A common mistake with architectural home design is forgetting to visualize how your family interacts throughout the home. It is important to assess your lifestyle before choosing final floor plans and determine what you have become accustomed to in a comfortable home.
10. UTILIZE MATERIALS YOU LOVE
One of the best parts about architectural home design is that you can put the things you love into your own custom space. One way to do this is through the use of unique materials.
Some places in your remodel that can utilize different materials include:
• Flooring (many different types of wood, tile, and carpet)
• Kitchen countertops
• Cabinetry
